Aquilegia viridiflora ‘Chocolate Soldier’ (columbine) A sweet-scented, heirloom Columbine introduced in 1902 bearing unusual, nodding, purplish brown petals held in yellow-green sepals. Bright chartreuse anthers make a nice finishing touch. Very attractive blue-green, fern-like foliage. To 12” tall. Columbines are tough & reliable perennials tolerant of most soils, though they prefer it rich & loamy. Cut back severely when its appearance begins to wane. Returns with gusto in early Spring.

ARABIS caucasica ‘Snowcap’ (rock cress) 'Snow Cap' forms an extravagant carpet of snow-white blooms in spring. The lush, gray-green mat of foliage grows about 5-10 inches tall and perhaps twice as wide. Plants require good drainage and plenty of sun; they're perfect for a rock garden, retaining wall, or edge of the border. Trim them back after bloom and their leaves will be neat for the rest of the season.

ARMERIA maritima ‘Nifty Thrifty’ (sea thrift) Noted for its variegated foliage, this compact, low-growing plant forms a dense, mounded tuft of stiff, linear, grass-like, green leaves (to 3” tall) edged with creamy white. Tufts will slowly spread outward. Tiny, bright pink flowers bloom in mid-spring in globe-shaped flower heads atop slender, naked stalks rising above the foliage to 4-5” tall. Many plants in the genus Armeria grow wild in saline environments along coastal areas where few other plants can grow well, hence the common name.

Armeria maritima ‘Rubrifolia’ (sea thrift) Shiny green, hair-like foliage turns reddish purple in spring; holds darker color the rest of the year. Excellent as a border plant and as an accent around other perennials. Deep pink “pom-pom” flower in late spring. Great plant to tiptoe on with bare feet!

Campanula garganica ‘Dickson’s Gold’ (bellflower) Spreading perennial with small, kidney-shaped yellow leaves; produces blue flowers. Sun to part shade.

Campanula glomerata ‘Superba’ (clustered bellflower) Vigorous, hairy perennial is clump-forming with dense, tubular flowers ranging fromviolet to lavender-blue. Cut back after first flowering to encourage a second flush.

CERATOSTIGMA plumbaginoides (leadwort) Brilliant blue flowers with striking red calyces cover bright green foliage from mid-summer to fall, when the leaves turn deep red. A wonderful groundcover; great choice for beds of spring bulbs because it emerges late, as the bulb foliage declines.

CHRYSANTHEMUM coccineum ‘Juwa’ (pyrethrum) Large, purple-red flowers with yellow centers on tall, unbranched stems. Blooms May to July.  Makes an excellent cut flower. Grows 30-35" tall.  Full sun.

Bright green long leaves are a good foil for all that happy yellow. This tickseed thrives in sunshine and well drained soil that isn't too heavy.

COSMOS astrosanguineus ‘Chocolate’ As the heat of the summer day subsides, the remarkable chocolate scent of these blooms intensifies. Plants form a medium-sized clump of dark green leaves, bearing cup-shaped blooms of deep burgundy-red. USDA Zone 8-9. Sun.  Blooms mid to late summer and early fall.  Grows 18-29" tall, with a spread of 10-12".

CYNARA cardunculus (cardoon) Cardoon makes a dramatic evergreen statement in any sunny perennial border with its 3-4' long, arching, ghost-like, jagged soft-gray foliage. Once the 3' wide clumps are established, they are topped with 6' tall stalks of blue-violet, thistle-like flowers in late summer. After flowering, the plants die back to the ground for a month-long rest, then begin growing again. For a striking bold-textured accent plant in the garden, you aren't going to beat cardoon! Well-drained soils are best.

Cynara cardunculus ‘White Thornless’ (cardoon) Similar in almost every respect to its thorny cousin, this Italian variety offers spineless stems that are superb for eating.

Delphinium ‘Pacific Giant Summer Skies’ An amazing delphinium! Requires a little more effort than other delphiniums, as you really should stake them for a spectacular display. The 4 ft. (or more) tall stalks bear 3", light blue double flowers with a white bee.

LEPTINELLA squalida ‘Platt’s Black’ (brass buttons) Discovered in the garden of Jane Platt of Portland, Oregon, this evergreen groundcover is a real Northwest workhorse. Tolerant of light foot traffic, this feathery, fern-like perennial is green with gray, purple, and black tints. In spring and summer tiny yellow, button-like flowers appear a few inches above the foliage. Tolerant of shade, ‘Platt’s Black’ isn’t particular about soil and is drought resistant once established. ‘Platt’s Black’ is great planted between stepping stones to add interest and suppress weeds. It can be used as a low traffic lawn and is a great low maintenance ground cover.

LEWISIA cotyledon hyb. ‘Regenbogen’ (bitter root) This mix displays a range of brilliant pastel, semi-double flowers ranging from light-pink, yellow-over-rose, purple and white, red-orange to blue-red, often with vivid stripes. An easy care, succulent-like rock garden and trough plant.

LILIUM formosanum (Taiwanese mountain lily) One of the tallest of all the lilies, easily reaching 6-7 ft before blooming in late summer in the south or in autumn up north. The fragrant flowers, often flushed with purple, last for several days and each ultimately gives rise to a 3-celled capsule, 3-4 inches long, with numerous little flat seeds packed two rows per cell. The brown, papery seed capsule is itself ornamental and looks good in the fall garden or in a dried arrangement. These big white beauties bloom right through scorching heat and smell sweet while they do it! Most lilies, including Formosa lily, need a cool dormant period for the bulbs to "rest," and will not survive in zones 9 and 10 unless dug up and refrigerated for a few weeks during what passes for winter.

LONICERA heckrottii ‘Gold Flame’ This vigorous vine grows 15 to 25 feet but can also be pruned back to form a dense shrub 4 to 6 feet round. Long, very fragrant 1 1/2 inch coral pink flowers with a pale yellow inside appear most of the year. Sun or light shade, low water.

Lonicera japonica purpurea (honeysuckle) A vigorous species reaching up to 12’ on a suitable support. Evergreen leaves turn purple in autumn and winter. Flowers small, white, changing to yellow with age. Succeeds in moderate soils and in partial shade. It may freeze during severe winters. An excellent climber for covering large spaces, tall fences and tree stumps. Makes good ground cover.

Lonicera ‘Blanche Sandman’ (trumpet honeysuckle) Profusely flowering variety. Tubular flowers are scarlet outside with yellow centers, borne in whorls at the ends of shoots from June to October, followed by decorative, orange-red berries (July-October). Suitable for growing over arbors, fences, gates, trellises or other supports. Reaches a height of ten feet with stems twining clockwise around supports. Performs well in moderately fertile soils, providing they are not too acid or dry. Particularly useful for sunny sites.

LUNARIA annua ‘Rosemary Verey’ (money plant) A new money plant with showy purple blotches on the foliage topped by purple flowers and followed by flat, translucent seedpods that look like fairy coins. Lunaria annua is extremely easy to grow in sun by the coast or shade inland. Not fussy about soil, though rich, loamy soil is best. Grows 2-3’ tall.

LYCHNIS coronaria ‘Angel Blush’ (campion) Tight rosettes on felty, silver green leaves. Produces white flowers with a soft pink eye, turning pink later in season. Drought tolerant and grows best in a sunny location.

Malva sylvestris ‘Zebrina’ Single, saucer-shaped flowers vary in color, but are usually white with purple stripes. 30” tall. Plants form an upright, bushy clump that may need to be staked if grown in rich soil. This is a short-lived perennial or biennial, often flowering itself to death in the first year, but coming back from self-sown seedlings. Excellent in containers, or the sunny border. In cold regions this is well worth growing, because of the long blooming season. Flowers are attractive to butterflies.

MATTHIOLA incana perennis ‘Alba’ (perennial stock) Small white flowers give off an intoxicating clove-like fragrance at night. Blooms appear late spring to summer over lance shaped foliage. Grows 12" tall.

Salvia guaranitica One of the best herbaceous perennials for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. This 3-4' tall South American native does well in shade and has a long blooming period. The large tubular flowers are a purplish blue. This is the typical cultivar, with green calyces.

Salvia guaranitica ‘Black & Blue’ (anise-scented sage) Spikes of narrow, long, luscious deep blue flowers with a long bloom season. Great for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. The dark purple-blue calyx makes the blue stand out even more. They can reach five to six feet tall in full sun, but are taller and gangly in partial shade. Well-drained soil is necessary.

Salvia holwayi (sage) Hailing from the cool highlands of Guatemala, this vigorous salvia volunteers hundreds of brilliant cardinal red, whorled blossoms in late fall. A yellow-green cast infuses young growth while mature leaves are darker green. Marked by light green grooves, the numerous, wine-infused lax stems become obscured by prominently veined triangular leaves, which taper to pronounced narrow tips. Grateful for a well drained, humus-rich spot and a hard cut after blooming, it creates a verdant backdrop for the mixed border. An excellent conservatory plant in colder climates and a splendid long lasting cut flower. Grows to 4’ when mature.

Salvia leucantha (Mexican bush sage) Grows in a loose, spreading mound up 4 ft tall. The leaves are lance shaped, like willow leaves, 1-5 inches long, puckery on top and wooly-white underneath. Blooms with white flowers extending from velvety purple or lavender-blue calyces, autumn through winter (or until the first frost). The bi-colored inflorescences are borne in very showy elongated arching clusters 6-12 inches in.

Salvia leucantha ‘Santa Barbara’ (compact Mexican bush sage) The flowers are a velvety purple rose color with a lighter purple lip. This salvia will bloom from fall until the first frost and is great for attracting hummingbirds. The growth habit is upright and it can grow 2.5' tall with a 4' spread. Foliage is a gray-green color with a fuzzy silver backing.

SAPONARIA ocymoides (soapwort) One of the most beautiful and useful perennials, from the Côte d'Azur region of France. SEDUM ‘Autumn Charm’ A sport of ‘Autumn Joy,’ this variegated sedum is edged in cream and the blooms on this plant begin as milky-white buds that turn cream and finally pink. By midsummer they have opened to bright pink blossoms, which then darken to a rich rosy-red as summer turns to fall. Cut all you like for indoor arrangements, or leave them on the plant and let them dry magnificently at season's end. After the butterflies depart for the season, birds come to feast on the dried seedheads, and they even remain to catch the first falling snow! Very showy and so easy to grow, this sedum puts up with poor soil, heat, humidity, cold, and even drought.

Tanacetum niveum ‘Jackpot’ (painted daisy) Has over 1,000 open blooms at any one time. This truly stunning border plant makes a record breaking feature with fine, feathery foliage and many 1in Chrysanthemum- like white flowers with a yellow center.

TEUCRIUM marum ‘Cat Thyme’ Spikes of crimson flowers on dark green aromatic shrub. Full sun, well-drained gritty soil.

THALICTRUM delaveyi Airy open panicles of lavender and lemon in midsummer to 6’. A good woodlander or for part shade.

Veronica teucrium ‘Royal Blue’ (Hungarian speedwell) A showy, bushy plant for the front of the border with long racemes of large, gentian-blue flowers produced from June to August. Will tolerate light shade. 12 ins

Veronica. ‘Darwin’s Blue’ (speedwell) A dwarf, long flowering variety with rich purple-blue flower spikes over dark green serrated leaves. Drought tolerant.

Veronica ‘High Five’ (speedwell) Very long and abundant, thick spikes of violet-blue flowers in July-August. Flowers tower over short compact plants with rich green foliage.

Veronica ‘Pink Panther’ (speedwell) Forms a compact, well-branched clump that is topped from August to September with liatris-like 22" tall lilac spikes.

ZAUSCHNERIA californica ‘Catalina’ (hummingbird fuchsia) Very showy in late summer and fall when covered with 1-2 inch fuchsia flowers. Catalina fuchsia will grow in full sun to part shade but it prefers good drainage with a little extra water. Attracts many hummingbirds!

Zauschneria californica ‘Dublin’ (hummingbird fuchsia) Spikes of bright red-orange fuchsia-like flowers bloom over spreading, drought-resistant green foliage covered in downy gray hairs. Grows 10-12" tall.  Full sun and well-drained soil.
